Kamehameha Schools (KS) recognizes the need to create a bridge for knowledge, understanding and mutual respect among the countries sharing the Pacific Rim. In 1991 KS decided to establish the Kamehameha Summer Institute for International Studies (KSIIS), an international junior scholars program that offers motivated and creative thinkers an opportunity to enhance their critical thinking and problem-solving skills by addressing global and Pacific Rim issues. KSIIS is a two week in-residence program held on the Kamehameha Schools Kapälama campus, overlooking the cosmopolitan city of Honolulu, the capital of the state of Hawai‘i. Research and the development of the students’ work will take place in Kamehameha Secondary School’s Midkiff Learning Center, a state-of-the-art library and media center. Students selected to attend this program will research, discuss, debate and propose solutions to the problems and challenges that face the countries of the Pacific Rim. Assuming leadership and policy-making roles, KSIIS participants will propose resolutions in such areas as economic development, human resources, public works, education and culture. Between 1991 and 2004, 372 students representing 22 countries participated in KSIIS: American Samoa, Australia, Canada, Chile, China (People’s Republic of), China (Taiwan), Colombia, Cook Islands, El Salvador, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Marshall Islands, Mexico, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Tahiti (French Polynesia) and USA (Alaska, California, Hawai‘i, Idaho, Illinois, Nebraska, Oregon, Washington, Texas, and New York).
