During this 4–hour course, students will use books by a variety
of children’s authors and will identify characteristics of
these authors’ writings and illustrations. Students will be
encouraged to incorporate these different characteristics in their
own writing. In the computer lab they will publish and illustrate
writing pieces. Students will also use interactive compact disks
(CD) to become familiar with children’s books. Students are
grouped by grade, with maximum enrollment being 15 students per
class.

**For students entering grades 1– 2
First and second grade students have a blast this summer moving,
learning, and having a load of fun in our Primary Program! First,
students develop good attitudes toward their bodies through fitness
and games, water safety and swimming instruction, and singing and
dancing. Second, learning new language arts, mathematics, and art
skills in a nurturing environment prepares students for the next
level. Finally, every Friday students take field trips around the
island! Students take three classes a day in one-hour blocks and
are issued a Kamehameha field trip T-shirt. Classes include Fitness
and Games, Swimming, Music, Reading/Writing, Math, and Art.

Enrichment Program #1000

This course will provide students with enrichment activities that
incorporate literature, dancing, story telling, art, cooking, singing,
sports and games with an emphasis on meaningful and motivational
instruction.
DRESS: Shorts, t–shirts, and sport shoes,
such as athletic or jogging shoes, are appropriate. As much as possible,
students will be grouped by age or entering grades.

An excellent opportunity to build physical, mental, and emotional
strength in an energized setting. The focus will be on developing
flexibility, body alignment and coordination through warm–ups,
exercises and across–the–floor drills. Students will
also learn to work with rhythms and tempos through a wide range
of musical styles by applying various interpretations of expression.

This class is for the non–swimmer. Students will learn basic
arm and leg movements and survival in or around water. Floating,
treading, and swimming in deep water must be mastered for students
to receive a Red Cross card.

Students will increase the skills and knowledge achieved in beginning
swimming. Front crawl, elementary backstroke, underwater swimming,
survival stroke and swimming 25 yards in deep water will be mastered.
Students will also be introduced to water safety, safe water entries,
and waterpolo.

Prerequisite: Completion of advanced
beginning course. Students should be capable of swimming 100 meters
without stopping. They must be capable of treading water and performing
a survival float for two minutes each
Students will be perfecting their skills in freestyle (front crawl)
and backstroke through new stroke drills and techniques. They will
also be introduced to breaststroke, sidestroke, elementary backstroke,
surface dives, rescue swims and entries, long, shallow dives, entering
from a height, underwater swimming and breathing patterns. Passing
this course meets the KS swimming proficiency requirement.

of the intermediate course. For students entering grades 2 and up
This course teaches basic water rescue skills and water safety awareness.
Swimming fitness and the use of training aids will be introduced.
The student is offered the opportunity to develop personal skills
in all styles of swimming and to increase safe enjoyment of aquatic
activities. Perfection of strokes and building up of endurance are
emphasized. Course will not lead to certification.

With Hawaiian Crafts #1060

Students will have fun with Hawaiian arts and crafts through hands-on
activities and visual instructions. Basic skills of lei making,
lauhala weaving, painting, tapa pounding/printing and other crafts
will be taught. Students will also learn the other uses of the Hawaiian
plants and materials that they use in their fun projects.
