This 2–hour class is designed to extend the knowledge of students who already have some computer skills. Students will gain better proficiency at basic word processing through newsletter writing, explore multi-media capabilities and the Internet. Students will further develop their technology and multi–media skills through the use of digital camera and scanner technologies, animation, and paint software. Enrollment is limited to 20 students.

He Hawaiÿi Käkou (We Are Hawaiian) #004

This 4-hour course will introduce elementary age keiki to Hawaiian culture, traditions, vlaues and language using navigation and Hawaiian gods as an overall theme. The content includes Mo'olelo (stories), hands on activities, and discussions that are geared toward getting the students excited about their heritage and culture as Native Hawaiians. Students will learn how their culture has survived throughout hundreds of years of change to the present day..

Hawaiian Language & Culture through the Arts #005

This daily 2–hour course will study the ahupua‘a through Hawaiian language, cultural values, crafts, music and dance. Concepts covered include ‘ohana, Hawaiian plants, food, geography, ocean studies and musical instruments. These will be taught using a variety of hands–on instructional methods, such as field trips, cooking, writing, singing, chanting and hula.

This course is designed to provide motivated learners opportunities to explore the process of inquiry in a lab setting. The focus of the class is active participation and direct experience with materials. The content of the course is centered around science. Each year, the course covers a different area of science including life science, earth science and physical science. Students may repeat the course. They will use skills and strategies they have already developed in an integrated study of science in their world. They will communicate their discoveries through written and visual arts in creating a journal, completing homework assignments and a class project.

Take a trip around the world via core curricular subjects designed to expose students entering grade three to a multitude of cultures, values, and skills. Language arts, mathematics, science, and art courses are created to challenge students with new curriculum and enhance skills. Students will also learn and reinforce problem solving, teamwork and study skills in a nurturing environment. Field trips to the Sumida Watercress Farm and to Waimanalo Beach Park help to integrate the four courses. Students take two classes a day in two-hour blocks. Classes include Reading/Writing, Math, Science, and Art. For enrichment only, no grades or evaluations issued.

Come and enjoy a Magic School Bus Summer! Fourth grade courses are integrated and centered around the Magic School Bus books. Using this popular educational series, teachers draw upon themes, concepts, vocabulary, and situations to enhance student learning. Not only will learning be enriched by Magic School Bus curricular themes, but students will also learn and reinforce problem solving, teamwork and study skills in a nurturing environment. Fieldtrips are to the zoo and to a Hawaiian fishpond. Students take two classes a day in two-hour blocks which include Reading/Writing, Math, Science, and Art.

An excellent opportunity to build physical, mental, and emotional strength in an energized setting. The focus will be on developing flexibility, body alignment and coordination through warm–ups, exercises and across–the–floor drills. Students will also learn to work with rhythms and tempos through a wide range of musical styles by applying various interpretations of expression.

Students will increase the skills and knowledge achieved in beginning swimming. Front crawl, elementary backstroke, underwater swimming, survival stroke and swimming 25 yards in deep water will be mastered. Students will also be introduced to water safety, safe water entries, and waterpolo.

Prerequisite: Completion of advanced beginning course. Students should be capable of swimming 100 meters without stopping. They must be capable of treading water and performing a survival float for two minutes each

Students will be perfecting their skills in freestyle (front crawl) and backstroke through new stroke drills and techniques. They will also be introduced to breaststroke, sidestroke, elementary backstroke, surface dives, rescue swims and entries, long, shallow dives, entering from a height, underwater swimming and breathing patterns. Passing this course meets the KS swimming proficiency requirement.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of the intermediate course. For students entering grades 2 and up

This course teaches basic water rescue skills and water safety awareness. Swimming fitness and the use of training aids will be introduced. The student is offered the opportunity to develop personal skills in all styles of swimming and to increase safe enjoyment of aquatic activities. Perfection of strokes and building up of endurance are emphasized. Course will not lead to certification.

Basic tennis rules and tennis skills will be taught. Fitness and conditioning will be developed. Tennis games will be played within instructional groups. Racquets and balls will be provided; however, students may bring their own racquets. Group instruction will emphasize fun and good sportsmanship.

Students will be tested at the beginning of the session to determine their ability level. Those without previous gymnastic experience will learn basic skills of tumbling, trampoline, side horse vaulting, and floor exercise. In addition, girls will learn uneven parallel bars and balance beam, while boys will learn pommel horse, high bar, rings and parallel bars. Students with one to two years’ experience will build upon their skills in the same areas. Class size is limited to 15 students.

Students will also learn the other uses of the Hawaiian plants and materials that they use in their fun projects.
