Kapalama High School Athletics

Please join me in congratulating our student athletes and the coaches who led them to victory this weekend. It was a banner weekend for Kamehameha Kapalama athletics. In cross country, our young men placed first in the state and our young women placed third. Steve Jenness is the head coach for the men and David Friedeman for the women. In football, permanent sub and head coach David Stant's varsity team beat St. Louis and is in contention for the ILH title. Come support them against Punahou at the stadium this Thursday evening. Big game coming up! In girls volleyball, science teacher and head coach Chris Blake ably guided our young ladies through an amazing season from start to finish which culminated in a victory against previously undeated Punahou for the Division I state title. Punahou had beaten us twice in the regular season. This was our fifth state title in a row. In bowling, Bradley Doi, coached by high school administrative assistant Mickie Ceberano, is a two-time ILH Boys Bowling champion. In kayaking, our young women won the ILH championship, led by head coach Dr. Blane Chong and Ka`ili Chong. We celebrate the accomplishments of our students and staff both in and out of the classroom.

Kapalama High School Students National Merit Semifinalists

KS Kapalama seniors Amelia Harvey daughter of Visual Arts Department head Don Harvey and Aaron Nagao are among 70 Hawaii high schoolers selected as semifinalists for the National Merit Schoalrship Program. They, along with 16,000 others from across the nation are now in the running for 8,200 National Merit Scholarships, worth over $36 million, that will be offered next spring. The seminalists scored in the top one percent of 1.5 million students nationwide who took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test last year.

For the past two summers Amelia has won a scholarship/internship at Johns Hopkins University to work in its genetics research labs. Aaron lead the high school math team to victory at the Mu Alpha Theta National Convention held in Knoxville, Tennessee and is among the state's top student mathletes. Both outstanding scholars are 13-year students of Kamehameha are living testaments to the quality of teachers and faculty at our schools.

National Merit Commended Scholars

Eight KS Kapalama seniors have been named National merit Commended Scholars. They are: Anela Akiona, Tyler Amina, Micah Contrades, Alyssa Fujimoto, Taylor Loui, Kamakani Mac-Donald-Chun, Leonard Paresa and Daylan Yogi.

Special Schedule

Students in grades 9-12 are being permitted to wear crew neck t-shirts or blouses. Pants (jeans are OK), capri's, bermuda's and board shorts (SHORTS, SKIRTS AND DRESSES MUST BE BURMUDA OR KNEE LENGTH) and slippers to school on Friday, March 19, providing they adhere to the following guidelines: 1) T-shirts and collared shirts: All t-shirts must be unaltered and have sleeves (no off the shoulder t-shirts). Tops must have sleeves. NO plunging or low necklines. Necklines must be modest and appropriate. NO midriffs, tank tops, or spaghetti strap t-shirts or blouses (even under sweaters or jackets is not permitted), obscene pictures, wording or promotion of alcohol or drugs: 2) NO scanty attire. NO pajamas, athletic shorts, sweat pants or leggings. NO leggings under skirts, shorts or dresses allowed. Bermuda shorts, skirts and dresses that fall at the knee may be worn. Shorts, skirts and dresses that fall mid-thigh and above are NOT appropriate. Uniform shorts may be worn. Boys may wear board shorts providing they fit properly. NO athletic shorts. 3) Boys must be clean shaven, no earrings. ID'S MUST BE WORN ON LANYARDS AT ALL TIMES Those not in casual dress must be in uniform dress code. Any infraction of the casual dress or uniform dress code guidelines will be referred to the Unit Office.

KGMB, Hawaii News Now will be airing some Song Contest teasers. Wednesday, Mar. 17's telecast, it will be about this year's theme, Ola Mau Na Mele Makamae O Kamehameha - Enduring Kamehameha Classics. Thursday, Mar. 18's broadcast will feature the Men's and Women's Alumni Glee Clubs, doing what they love best, singing. They're helping preserve the Kamehameha tradition of choral singing.

KGMB television will broadcast the Song Contest live at 7:30pm on Friday, Mar. 19. In addition, a special one-hour pre-show will air beginning at 6:30pm. KGMB will re-telecast both the pre-show and Song Contest on Thursday, Mar. 25 at 6:30pm. The event will be streamed on the Web at http://www.ksbe.edu/songcontest and for the first time, the page will feature a live chat function. You may also join the social media conversation on Twitter by adding the #KSSONG as a tag after each tweet.

Fourth quarter PE assignments will be posted at Ka'ahumanu Gym lobby by Tuesday, 3/16. Please check the board for your schedule which may have changed!!! Report to your assigned teacher during your assigned day and period starting Tuesday, April 6th!!

ATTENTION ALL STUDENTS WHO HAVE WORK IN THE STUDENT ART SHOW! Please pick-up your art work from your respective art teachers on this Thursday or Friday, March 18th and 19th! Mahalo!

Over 30 teams from 9 different schools competed in each event. Kamehameha team Po’o won two events and team Luna won the third.

Here's your chance to see the Song Contest Pre-Show first! "The Echo of Our Song" celebrates the 90 years of Song Contest history through memories & mele. It will be playing all day on Friday on Channel 2. The Listening & Viewing Area in Midkiff will be showing it as well.
