Guidance Curriculum

Guidance classes are taught at grades 9-12. Grade-level and Outreach Counselors conduct the sessions to assist students in their personal and social growth and to prepare them for college and/or other post high careers. Guidance lessons take students from an awareness/knowledge level to the application and practice stage as they demonstrate their understanding.

The following topics are covered in Guidance classes at each grade level.

Grade 9 - Six sessions are scheduled during the first semester. Topics covered are:

  • Introduction To Guidance
  • Introduction To Student Support Center
  • Values Clarification & Decision Making
  • Healthy Relationships
  • Appreciating Diversity
  • Managing Stress

Additional activities supplement the Grade 9 guidance curriculum. These include the following topics:

- Making High School Count - National Speaker Presentation

- High School Registration

- Introduction to Sophomore Year

 

Grade 10 - Eight sessions are scheduled during the second semester. These include:+

  • Guidance Overview/Decision Making
  • Ke Kahua Kupono (Building on a Firm Foundation)
  • Dealing with Stress
  • Drug Awareness
  • PLAN Test Results
  • Introduction to On-Line Resources
  • Introduction to "My Road"
  • Control Your Destiny

Grade 11 - Eight sessions are scheduled throughout the school year. Guidance sessions address:

  • Getting Acquainted With The Counseling Center
  • So You're a Junior
  • Toothpaste
  • PSAT Results / My Road
  • College Knowledge
  • How Colleges Select Students
  • Resume, Recommendations, Application Process, & NCAA
  • Control Your Destiny

In addition, two evening workshops are offered: 1) Getting Started: The College Search Process-A Workshop for Juniors and Their Parents and 2) College Costs and Financial Aid-A Workshop for Junior Parents.

Grade 12 -Seven sessions are scheduled throughout the school year. Guidance topics include:

  • College Checklist For Seniors
  • How Students Select Colleges/Narrowing Your Options
  • The Senior Year Experience
  • College Financial Aid
  • Making Your Final Decision
  • Transitions
  • What's Next

In addition, numerous informational seminars and group guidance activities are presented to enhance students' knowledge about colleges and post-high careers. These include: Introduction to Senior Year - The Alumni Panel, The College Board Fair, University of California Schools, BYU, and UH-Manoa college application seminars. Two evening workshops are offered as well: 1) Looking Into College - A Workshop for Senior Parents and 2) College Financial Aid - A Workshop for Senior Parents.
