| Uncorporative Student or Teachable Moment? | ||
| Teacher: | "Japanese parents take a lot into consideration before naming their newborn baby. They consider the meaning of the kanji and the qualities they invoke, they recall what famous individuals had the same name.... They think of their hopes and dreams, they wish the very best for the baby. If you were a parent, what name would you give your baby boy or baby girl? Take a look at the list of boy and girl names and have fun!" | |
| Student: | "Are
you trying to promote teenage sex?" Asked a student with an air of defiance. The class gasped at the forwardness of this question. I took a breath and a moment to reflect. What does this student need in this moment? As my attention turned inward a word appeared in my awareness - "empathy". What this student needs is to understand the concept of empathy. I looked at the student with a respectful smile and thanked her for that question. |
