Teacher: "Yoku dekimashita! Have you wondered why the 'WA' line of the hiragana chart is missing the rest of the hiragana? The double vowel verbs belong to this 'WA' line. The 'w' only shows up before 'a'. Do you see what's happening?"

[In this way, you build student understanding one pattern at a time. Student retention of informal forms learned in this way is enhanced by a very simple translation exercise which incorporates all of the informal forms [nouns, adjectives, adjectival nouns and verbs]. Students learn to distinguish the different parts of speech and then distinguish the different informal forms simultaneously. This test is repeated four or five more times until everyone becomes proficient in forming the informal forms. This, then, is followed by a 10 min. spontaneous informal style conversation test. It is amazing how, in a rather short time, students internalize the informal forms.]
