Language Arts and Social Studies

Reading:

Reading is defined as the construction of meaning from text.
We have a Social Studies based, literature-centered comprehension based reading program. A variety of reading materails and follow up activities are chosen to meet the needs and interests of the students.
Students groups vary throughout the year according to their
needs and interests.

Writing:

2nd Grade uses the process approach to writing.
Our primary goal is for the sudents to develop a clear, logical and creative written expression of their ideas and experiences. Writing is integrated into all subject areas.

Spelling:

Spelling is taught through the writing process and the direct instruction in the class. We use common classroom words, words from Science and Social Studies and words that illustrate a regular spelling pattern. Students are expected to not only learn the spelling words, but apply the spelling patterns in their writing.
