The following are my short- and long-term professional development goals. I believe that these goals will help me become the best teacher I can be with the most effective teaching tools, strategies and technology available.

Short-term Goals

By Winter of 2004, my primary goal is to complete the training provided by the Online Instructor Training Institute (OITI) through Kamehameha Schools Extension Education Division's Distance Learning Department. I will be introduced to the application of educational technology in teaching and learning, utilizing strategies in design, selection, development, integration, and evaluation. Coursework will continue in the planning, design, and development of online instruction for educational and training settings. I will learn to implement online course elements such as student interaction, course management, testing, and content delivery using an authoring environment such as Web course tools. Being a part of OITI has networked me with collegues outside of my subject area and the grade levels I teach, as we all have been working collaboratively through this program.

Having recently completed the Master of Arts in Teaching and Learning (MATL) program at Nova Southeastern University, I have been experimenting and incorporating applicable strategies and techniques from the current educational trends of Active Learning, Classroom Management, Integrated Assessment, Reflective Practices, Multiple Intelligences, Brain-based Learning and Technology in my music classes. It has been evident in my classroom that these teaching strategies and techniques have been enhancing my ability to teach and is helping me to grow professionally.

Long-term Goals

I am committed to further developing my craft to become a better classroom teacher and the most effective music educator possible.

As an instructor in the classroom, I plan to expand my repertoire of the theoretical concepts, practical methods, strategies, knowledge and skills taught in the MATL program. To assist students to reach their fullest potential, I must continue to appraise and refine my own instructional practice.

It is important that I align my music curriculum to the national, state and local standards. Standards clarify teacher expectations about what students are to achieve. In addition, standards act as guidelines for what students need to be, in order to be successful in school and in life. I am currently a member of the KSIPP (Kamehameha Schools Instructional Planning Project) Standards Committee whose purpose is to develop and implement content and performance standards for Kamehameha Schools.

Another objective is to develop a full assessment plan for the K-3 music program, which incorporates singing, instrument playing, music appreciation, multicultural music and dance. By evaluating and improving methods of assessment, students will be able to effectively and successfully demonstrate their skill mastery and understanding.

As a music educator, I am committed to be as knowledgeable as possible in the areas of music pedagogy, music education, music- and educational-technology. I will continue to improve my skills and be proficient in the areas of sequencing, composing, arranging and recording. Incorporating technology in the classroom through powerpoint presentations and self-created web sites will enhance musical activities. I intend to train in the Orff-Schulwerk method of music and Phyllis Weikart's ‘Integrated Movement and Music Across the Curriculum.' Eventually, I would like to receive certification in these two areas of concentration.

The attendance of conferences and clinics that focus on music, early childhood education, brain research and technology will help me to stay apprised of current teaching methods, literature, and the latest research.

I am currently involved with the Hawai'i Music Educators Association and the Hawai'i Orff-Schulwerk Association. With a broader sense of current teaching methods and the way students learn, I plan to become more active in these two professional music organizations. As a member of both of these significant groups, I hope to promote music education and appreciation through the state education system and the local community.

Future career goals in consideration are a second masters degree in music education and a doctoral degree either in music education or in the field of education and technology.
