Introduction to Emoticons

Emoticons, the modern-day Ki‘i Pöhaku, are “emotional icons” used for text-based internet communication. An Emoticon is a sequence of standard keyboard symbols (QWERTY) used to express voice inflections, facial expressions, and body gestures which are absent in written communication.

Emoticons, also known as smileys :-), are used in internet e-mail, chat rooms, instant message conversations, SMS text messages, forums, newsgroups and other forms of communication using computers.

In online communication, the written word has the potential for misunderstandings. This is due to the absence of tone, vocal expression, and/or signals given out by body language. Emoticons, along with certain behavioral rules from netiquette, can be effective toward avoiding misinterpretation of the writer’s intent. Several common emoticons are listed below.
