First
Grade Learning
Reading
Some
general questions you may want to ask your child as
he/she reads a story may include questions to help:
recall facts; sequence events; predict story endings
or next events; compare characters or story line;
increase vocabulary understanding; infer character
behaviors and feelings; relate the story to
himself/herself; determine cause and effect
connections; and evaluate the character or
actions.
Writing
The
class has been creating their own stories during
Writer's Workshop. The students are developing books
based upon their own experiences just like real
authors do. Also, they are learning about what good
writers do when they have "smart" ideas. First graders
are continually working on keeping spaces between
words, using capital letters appropriately, placing
punctuations at the end of sentences, and spelling
site words correctly.
Math
Investigations
We
are continuously investigating numbers, ways of
counting, and graphing surveys. Questions are: What do
you notice about the graph? How did you solve that
problem? How are you counting?
Geography
and Timeline
The
current units of study relate to mapping skills and
Events from My Past. Students are currently reading
books about characters everyday lives and how they
deal with siblings, family ordeals/events, etc. They
will be making their individual timelines to show
change over time. We also have a class timeline and
grade level timeline.
Spelling
Students
take home 5 spelling words to study a week based on
their individual needs. They will be tested on these
words plus 2 additional words from the previous
week.
