Charlene Christensen

Mrs. Charlene Christensen has been teaching at Kamehameha Schools for 18 years, twelve of them as a fifth grade teacher. This is her fourth year as a math resource teacher at Kamehameha Elementary School.

During Mrs. Christensen’s last three years of teaching 5th grade, she teamed taught with another 5th grade teacher. She was the math and science curriculum teacher to both classes while her partner taught the language arts curriculum. It was during this time that she realized how much she enjoyed teaching math, and when the opportunity arose she accepted the Math Resource position.

Currently she works with teachers and students in grades Kindergarten through sixth providing math instruction for students who need extra help. She also has been supporting teachers in aligning the math curriculum that addresses the national standards.

Charlene enjoys chess and was instrumental in developing the elementary Math Chess Club.

Judith Mackenzie

Judy Mackenzie is a graduate of the University of Nevada at Reno where she received a BA in Science and a MA in Education specializing in remedial reading. She has been an elementary teacher for 33 years. Twenty-five of those years have been with Kamehameha Schools.

She was offered a teaching position in 1979 with the K-3 KEEP reading program at Kamahameha Schools, a position she held for eight years. This program provided an excellent learning opportunity for both teachers and students. In 1987 she accepted the opportunity to teach at the Kamehameha Elementary School campus. She taught in the fourth grade for ten years and the sixth grade for four years.

Currently she is in her third year as the KES 4-6 Reading Resource teacher. She works collaboratively with the 4-6 grade teachers providing reading instruction for students who need extra assistance. She meets with small groups of students twice a cycle reinforcing skills and strategies needed to become an effective reader and writer. Her methods include direct and indirect instruction and using the computer as a means to teach reading strategies and skills.

She loves learning about new things, the arts, computers, the ocean, hiking and traveling. She tries to impart this love of learning to her students.

Judy Scheu

Judy Scheu has been a member of the Kamehameha Schools’ faculty for 30 years. She has taught children in grades 1 and 2 and was a language arts curriculum developer for the Kamehameha Elementary Education Program.

Judy now serves as the Reading Resource Teacher for grades K–3. Her classroom/office is in Room 329 of the Kekela`okalani Building. She works in collaboration with classroom teachers to provide reading instruction for children in need of extra support. Judy typically works with small groups of children for three half-hour periods per cycle, helping them to apply and reinforce the skills and strategies taught in their regular classrooms.

Judy is an avid reader who enjoys a wide range of genres. She loves exploring the children’s literature sections in bookstores and sharing "new discoveries" and "old favorites" with her students. Her most important instructional goal is to increase and enhance the enthusiasm and excitement her students feel for reading.
