Here is Roger Ebert's prediction for Lilo and and Stitch and Oscar:
The race here seems to be between "Spirited Away" by the Japanese master Hayao Miyazaki, considered the greatest of all animators, and "Lilo & Stitch," an uncommonly entertaining and original Disney film. Disney is distributing the Miyazaki, but is likely to put its clout behind the film from its own shop. So it's "Lilo & Stitch."

Last year was a great year for animation fans. With the creation of the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film, many people felt their beloved 'toons had finally been recognized as a legitimate art form, rather than just a form of children's entertainment.
Four of this year's nominees -- "Lilo & Stitch," "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron," "Spirited Away" and "Treasure Planet" -- returned to traditional 2D cel animation styles, while "Ice Age" was a fully computer-animated production. more

The nomination for best animated feature film was the pair's first. Sanders
called it "a very pleasant surprise." They're sending out mahalo messages

Sanders said: "Everyone in Hawaii opened their hearts and homes to us. Hawaii gave us their music and dance and taught us about ohana, which we try to incorporate in our own lives." more

Till the very end of the year, Lilo and Stitch gets mentioned again in a Star-Bulletin article - Top of the Arts
Lilo and Stitch has done very well this year at the box office. It has ended up as the 12th highest grossing film for 2002, making $146 million(domestically). Here is the list of the top 25 box-office moneymakers for 2002.
Read Roger Ebert's The Best Movies of the Year - he lists his top 10 choices as well as the following for:
Eleventh Place(which includes you know what!)
Top 10 lists by their nature are frustrating. After the critic names the best film of the year, does it
really matter that one title is seventh and another ninth? One year when I alphabetized my list, however, readers were furious, as if I'd shirked my duty.
There were many films this year I admired or loved or was delighted by. If the Jury Prize is sort of an
alternative top 10, then here are the films tied for 11th place:
-
- "About a Boy," "About Schmidt," "Antwone Fisher," "Auto Focus," "Baran," "Blade," "Blood Work," "Bloody Sunday," "Bowling for Columbine," "Changing Lanes," "Chicago," "Diaries of Vaslav Nijinsky," "Frida," "Gangs of New York," "Good Girl," "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," "How I Killed My Father," "Igby Goes Down," "Insomnia," "The Kid Stays in the Picture," "Kwik Stop," "Lagaan," "Last Orders ," "Les Destinees," "Lilo & Stitch," "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towners," "Maryam," "Me Without You," "Metropolis ," "Moonlight Mile," "Nakdahar," "Nicholas Nickleby," "One Hour Photo," "Personal Velocity," "The Pianist," "Piano Teacher," "Possession," "Pumpkin," "Punch-Drunk Love," "Rabbit-Proof Fence," "Read My Lips," "Real Women Have Curves," "Red Dragon," "Signs," "Sleepy Time Gal," "Solaris," "Son's Room," "Song for Martin,"
"Standing in the Shadows of Motown," "Storytelling," "Sum of all Fears," "Sunshine State," "Talk to Her," "Tully," "25th Hour," "We Were Soldiers," "What Time is it There?" and "XXX."
