In her will, Ke Ali`i Pauahi Bishop stated the Kamehameha
Schools were to enroll both day and boarding scholars.
Thereby, students who live on the Neighbor Islands
can attend school on Kapalama Heights as boarders.
Also, boarding spaces are available for a small
number of Oahu students whose circumstances warrant
this opportunity being extended to them.
The
Boarding Program is a quality residential learning
community for Kamehameha Schools students who live
on the Kapälama campus. The program is a safe
and nurturing environment:
This
is in keeping with the Trustees' Mission:
Kamehameha's
Schools' mission is to fulfill Pauahi's desire
to create educational opportunties in perpetuity
to improve the capability and well-being of
people of Hawaiian ancestery.
To
accomplish this mission, the Boarding Program strives
to ensure that:
- Each
student has a meaningful relationship with an
adult staff member;
- Each
student has a meaningful relationship with one
or more other students;
- Family
units are supported by encouraging student-parent
communication and understanding (rapport and
contact);
- Responsible
participation in the boarding and school community
is encouraged;
- Enrichment
activities are available to students to contribute
to their education during after-school hours
and on weekends;
- Each
student is involved in one or more organized
extra-curricular activity;
- An
awareness of ethnic and cultural identity is
fostered;
- Functional
student rooms, kitchen, laundry facilities and
lounge areas are provided;
- Well-balanced,
appetizing meals, including a variety of foods,
are provided;
- Health
care is available; and students with potential
or actual social/emotional difficulties are identified
and assisted.
Briefly
put, we intend for the program:
- To
provide opportunities for educational enrichment
and social and emotional growth; and nurture
mutual respect and shared responsibility.
