Athletics Department Directors

 

President and Headmaster
Earl T. Kim

Earl T. Kim was named the Po‘o Kula for Kamehameha Schools Kapālama in November, 2011, becoming the 11th head of school in the campus’ history.

Kim came over to Kamehameha after serving as the District Superintendent of Schools for the Montgomery school district in New Jersey. Prior to that, he was the District Superintendent of Schools for the Verona Township district. He also held positions as an Assistant Principal and Principal at two New Jersey high schools, and taught at Trenton Central High School in Trenton New Jersey.

Kim was born and raised in Hawai‘i, graduating from ‘Iolani School in 1980. He then attended Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, earning his Bachelors degree in history. Kim spent four years in the U.S. Marine Corps, and later earned a Masters degree in Public Affairs, Domestic Policy Analysis from Princeton University.

He and his wife, Kit, have two children.

Principals
Julian K. Ako

Julian K. Ako, KS '61, was appointed Principal of the high school in May 2005. He joined KS in 1979 as an assistant to the director of Extension Education and since then has served in several capacities including high school Social Studies Department Head, part-time dormitory advisor and Dean of Student Activities at the Kapälama Campus, coordinator of summer enrichment's Külia I Ka Pono Program and facilitator in the development of KS' Strategic Plan 2000-2015. He held the position of Senior Education Administrator in the Office of the Vice President for Education, and prior to assuming his current responsibilities, he held the position of Interim Head of Educational Support Services at KS.

Board Memberships include: Chairperson of The National Advisory Board of the Harvard University Principal's Center, Pihana Nä Mamo, and 'Ahahui 'Ölelo Hawai'i. He speaks Hawaiian and Polish fluently and received Nä Hökü Hanohano Awards for Haku Mele (Composer of the Year) in 2001 and 2003.

Ako received his B.A. in Economics from Macalester College. He also earned and M.A., in Slavic and Soviet Area Studies, and a Masters Degree in Philosophy, Modern East European History from Kansas University.

Puanani Mills Ka'ai

Puanani Mills Ka'ai, Punahou '79, was appointed Principal of Kamehameha Middle School in June 2007.

Prior to joining Kamehameha, she spent 10-years at Mid-Pacific Institute. While at Mid-Pacific, she spent seven years as a middle school teacher, and three years as the middle school principal. Before Mid-Pacific, she spent eleven years in the Department of Education as an elementary school teacher.

Ka'ai received a Bachelor of Education degree, a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction, and an additional Masters Degree in Private School Leadership from the University of Hawai'i.

Athletic Director
Glennie Adams

Glennie Adams, KS '78, is the Director of Athletics at the Kamehameha Schools Kapālama. A graduate of the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo with a BA in psychology and the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa with a Masters Degree in Social Work. She was the Head Coach of women’s volleyball at Chaminade University of Honolulu for 15 years, and in addition spent the last nine of those as the Assistant Athletics Director. She also spent 13 years as a Social Worker with the Department of Human Services and Judiciary in the State of Hawai‘i.

Associate Directors
Robert Benham, Ph.D.

Bob Benham, KS, ‘73, is the Associate Director of Athletics at the Kamehameha Schools Kapalama. A graduate of the University of Hawai‘i (B.Ed. in Health and Physical Education and Michigan State University (Master’s and PHD in Kinesiology), he taught and coached high school physical education and athletics between 1976-1992, and held research, teaching, and administrative positions at UH-Manoa, and Michigan State University, and Sonoma State University between 1996-2011. Bob serves as a board member for the National Council for Accreditation of Coaches Education (NCACE).

Maurice Maggiolino

Maurive Maggiolino has spent the last seven years at Chaminade University, where he held the positions of Sports Information Director, first assistant men’s basketball coach and head coach of the men’s golf program. Prior to his time at Chaminade, Maggiolino was the head men’s basketball coach (Central Region) for the Empire State Games in New York State and served three years as the first assistant coach for the men’s basketball program at SUNY Cortland.
