Athletics Department Directors

President and Headmaster
Michael J. Chun, Ph.D.

Dr. Michael J. Chun, KS '61, was appointed president of Kamehameha Schools in April 1988.

Prior to his appointment as president of Kamehameha Schools, Chun taught at the University of Hawai'i from 1970 to 1981 where he directed graduate instruction and research in environmental engineering. He served as chief engineer of the City and County of Honolulu from 1981 to 1985. He also served as president of Park Engineering, a Honolulu engineering consulting firm, from 1985 to 1988.

He is a trustee of Hawai’i Pacific University, board member of the Hawai’i Medical Services Association, and director of the Metropolitan Board of the YMCA of Honolulu. Dr. Chun is also a director of Alexander & Baldwin, Incorporated, Matson Navigation Company, Bishop Museum, and the Bank of Hawai'i.

Chun's doctorate in environmental health engineering and bachelor's degree in civil engineering were granted by the University of Kansas. He holds a master's degree in civil engineering from the University of Hawai'i.

 

Principals

Julian K. Ako

Julian K. Ako, KS '61, was appointed Principal of the high school in May 2005. He joined KS in 1979 as an assistant to the director of Extension Education and since then has served in several capacities including high school Social Studies Department Head, part-time dormitory advisor and Dean of Student Activities at the Kapälama Campus, coordinator of summer enrichment's Külia I Ka Pono Program and facilitator in the development of KS' Strategic Plan 2000-2015. He held the position of Senior Education Administrator in the Office of the Vice President for Education, and prior to assuming his current responsibilities, he held the position of Interim Head of Educational Support Services at KS.

Board Memberships include: Chairperson of The National Advisory Board of the Harvard University Principal's Center, Pihana Nä Mamo, and 'Ahahui 'Ölelo Hawai'i. He speaks Hawaiian and Polish fluently and received Nä Hökü Hanohano Awards for Haku Mele (Composer of the Year) in 2001 and 2003.

Ako received his B.A. in Economics from Macalester College. He also earned and M.A., in Slavic and Soviet Area Studies, and a Masters Degree in Philosophy, Modern East European History from Kansas University.

 

Puanani Mills Ka'ai

Puanani Mills Ka'ai, Punahou '79, was appointed Principal of Kamehameha Middle School in June 2007.

Prior to joining Kamehameha, she spent 10-years at Mid-Pacific Institute. While at Mid-Pacific, she spent seven years as a middle school teacher, and three years as the middle school principal. Before Mid-Pacific, she spent eleven years in the Department of Education as an elementary school teacher.

Ka'ai received a Bachelor of Education degree, a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction, and an additional Masters Degree in Private School Leadership from the University of Hawai'i.

 

Athletic Director

William Kanani Souza

William Kanani Souza, KS '63, is the Director of Athletics at Kamehameha Schools Kapālama. A graduate of the University of Northern Colorado, he has a BA in Education, an MA in Athletic Administration, and a AB Ed. D in Recreation Education. He has been with the Kapālama Campus Athletic Department for 12 years serving as the Head Football Coach and Assistant Athletic Director. Before coming to the Kapālama Campus, Kanani served as Assistant Football Coach at the University of Hawai‘i for 12 years, at the University of Colorado for one year, and at the University of Northern Colorado for 5 years. Kanani’s career started as a Teacher and Coach for the Department of Education.

 

Associate Directors

Glennie Adams

Glennie Adams, KS '78, is an Associate Director of Athletics at the Kamehameha Schools Kapālama. A graduate of the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo with a BA in psychology and the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa with a Masters Degree in Social Work. She was the Head Coach of women’s volleyball at Chaminade University of Honolulu for 15 years, and in addition spent the last nine of those as the Assistant Athletics Director. She also spent 13 years as a Social Worker with the Department of Human Services and Judiciary in the State of Hawai‘i.

Blane Gaison
Blane Gaison

Blane Gaison, KS '76, is the Associate Director of Athletics at the Kamehameha Schools Kapālama. A graduate of the University of Hawai‘i with a Bachelors Degree in Pre-Law and a minor in Secondary Education, he played professional football for the National Football League's Atlanta Falcons from 1980-1985. Blane is the recipient of the National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) Citation Award for his contribution and services to high school athletics at the local, state, and national levels. A former member of the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) Board of Directors, he is currently the Hawaii State Liaison to the NIAAA and NFHS. Blane is active in community service and a leadership member of New Hope Christian Fellowship.
